Quick Reference · Lesson 8
Bones
The three rules — say all three, every time
- Raw only. Never cooked. Cooked bone hardens and splinters
- Bigger than the dog's mouth, so it can't be swallowed whole
- Always supervised — especially until they know how their dog chews
Which bone
| Bone | Best for |
|---|---|
| Turkey necks | Softer, consumable. Smaller dogs, first-timers |
| Beef ribs | Good all-rounder |
| Marrow bones Large (1) · Medium (3) · Small (5) | Our most popular bone. Match the size to the dog. Marrow is very rich — scoop some out for a heavy chewer |
| Knuckle | Larger, longer-lasting |
| Pork femurs | Hardest. Serious chewers only |
How often
1 – 2 × a week. Marrow bones once a week max. Puppies: softer options only — chicken necks, smaller ribs.
Warn them about the stools
White and crumbly after a bone is normal. So is mild constipation. A customer who isn't warned will assume something's wrong.
Ground bone ≠ recreational bone
"The bone in the food is nutrition. The bone in the bag is entertainment."
Never say a bone is safe for all dogs.
