Quick Reference · Lesson 1
How much to feed
Adult dogs — % of body weight per day
| Goal | Daily |
|---|---|
| Adult dog, healthy weight | 2% |
| Adult dog, very active | 2.8% |
| Needs to lose weight | 1.5% |
| Needs to gain weight | 3% |
| Adult cat | 2% |
Example: an 80 lb dog eats 1.6 – 2.4 lb a day.
Puppies — % of current body weight per day
| Age | Daily |
|---|---|
| 2 – 3 months | 8 – 10% |
| 4 – 5 months | 6 – 8% |
| 6 – 8 months | 4 – 6% |
| 9 – 12 months | 3 – 4% |
| 12 months + | 2 – 2.5% |
If the adult weight is genuinely known: feed 2 – 2.5% of expected adult weight instead.
Kittens — % of current body weight per day
| Age | Daily |
|---|---|
| 2 – 4 months | 11.5% |
| 5 – 8 months | 8% |
| 9 – 12 months | 5% |
| 12 months + | 2% |
Cats and kittens are small enough that grams are easier than pounds. A 10 lb adult cat eats about 0.2 lb a day — roughly 91 g.
Nursing mothers
Up to 2½ times her normal daily amount. Adjust to litter size and body condition.
⚠ Always
