As the weather cools and we move from fall into winter, nature naturally changes its rhythm - and so do the animals that thrive in it. Just like fruits and vegetables, many animal proteins have their own “seasons” that influence their nutrient profiles, availability and even how they benefit our pets.
From November through February, temperatures drop, and wildlife begins to store energy for warmth and survival. Animals like turkey, duck and lamb tend to have slightly higher fat content during the colder months - nature’s way of providing insulation and energy reserves.
This seasonal change isn’t just good for them - it’s great for our pets, too! Feeding proteins that are naturally richer and more nutrient-dense in winter can support your dog’s energy levels, skin and coat health during the dry, cold months.
Here are some of the key proteins that tend to be in season - and why they make great choices for your dog during the winter months:
🦃 Turkey
Lean but hearty, turkey provides a balanced source of protein with moderate fat - ideal for maintaining muscle while avoiding excess calories. It’s gentle on digestion and packed with tryptophan, which helps support mood and relaxation.
🦆 Duck
A richer protein, duck is higher in fat and perfect for keeping dogs warm and energized during colder weather. It’s also a great option for pets with allergies or sensitivities to more common proteins.
🐑 Lamb
Naturally higher in iron and zinc, lamb helps support immune health and recovery. It’s a warming protein - great for dogs that tend to run cold or lose condition in winter.
Feeding “with the seasons” mimics how animals would naturally eat in the wild - rotating through available prey as the environment changes. This not only keeps your pet’s diet interesting but also helps them receive a wide range of amino acids, fats and micronutrients throughout the year.
A winter rotation that includes proteins like turkey, duck, and lamb can support:
Healthy skin and coat during dry, cold weather
Balanced energy for play and warmth
Digestive health through natural variety
Just as our routines shift with the seasons, our pets benefit when their diets do, too. During the colder months, think rich, warming proteins - nature’s way of helping animals (and our furry family members) thrive year-round.
Explore our blends and discover what’s in season for your pet this winter - because feeding fresh means feeding with nature.
